ABOUT MADRE MARIA
This blend is the collective effort of 55 smallholders represented by the Madre Maria Association in the town of Santa Maria in southwest Colombia’s Huila department. Located just outside of Neiva, the capital city of Huila, Santa Maria is a city established on a high plain between two mountain ranges. Santa Maria benefits from the rich volcanic soil and growing conditions of this sandwich effect expressed in the cup as complex and clean; the classic Huila profile.
Huila is a prized growing region, celebrated as among Colombia’s best for its terroir and production capacity. It carries the prestige of Denomination of Origin status. Outstanding offerings in Huila offer a distinctive complexity and fruit-forward character. Typical varieties include Castillo, Caturra and Typica.
This traditional washed coffee has been sun-dried for a period of 15-20 days. Excelso refers to the size of the bean, which indicates a screen size of 15-16 (slightly smaller than Supremo beans at a screen size of 17).
